Singularities in Geometric Analysis:
Minimal Surfaces and Mean Curvature Flows

Three 2-year postdoctoral positions in Geometric Analysis.
Deadline for application: December 22nd 2025.

The Department of Mathematics "Federigo Enriques" at the University of Milan invites applications for three Postdoctoral Research Positions (Contratti di Ricerca) in Geometric Analysis in the context of the FIS 2 Starting Grant SiGmA.

Candidate profile

We are looking for excellent candidates whose research interests are related to one or more of the following topics:

  • Geometric Measure Theory (regularity theory, structure of measures);

  • Calculus of Variations (particularly for geometric problems, e.g. in the context of minimal surfaces theory);

  • Geometric Flows (specifically Mean Curvature Flows and its weak solutions);

  • Elliptic and Parabolic PDEs related to geometry.

The successful candidates will work in close collaboration with Prof. Stuvard and the Analysis group at UniMi, enjoying a vibrant international research environment.

Offer and Conditions

  • Duration2 years, with possibility of extension up to additional 12 months.

  • Start Date: Flexible, as early as February 1st 2026. Preferably not later than September 2026.

  • Salary: The gross salary for each position is €39.224,29/year. That amount should roughly correspond, after taxes, to about €2.200/month (paid over 13 monthly installments). Please notice that this is an estimate, and the net amount may depend on personal circumstances.

  • Tax benefit: For those who, at the start of the contract, will have been working abroad (i.e., outside of Italy) for at least the previous 2 years (even if they do not hold the Italian citizenship), it will be possible to claim a tax benefit (Rientro dei Cervelli) that should increase the salary to about €2.700/month (paid over 13 monthly installments).

  • Additional benefits: the successful candidates will be guaranteed significant dedicated funding for travel and visiting research periods in Italy and abroad.

Application: deadline and requirements

The deadline for applications is December 22nd 2025 at 11:59 AM Italian time (aka CET).

All information on the selection process is available at this link, in Italian. The link "Bando + allegati in formato zip" downloads the official job opening call and the relevant attachments.

We have prepared an informal translation in English of the official job opening and rules for the hiring process which is available here. Please, notice that our translation does not hold any legal validity, and all official information can be only checked in the original document.

Ph.D. requirement: holding a doctoral degree at the time of application is not a requirement for applying. If not already held at the time of application, you will need to obtain your doctoral degree within 6 months of the date of posting of the call for the position, i.e., by May 20th 2026. Moreover, if you are in this situation, and you are still pursuing your PhD, you must be enrolled (at least) in the 3rd year of a doctoral program.

Recognition of foreign degree: the successful candidates holding a doctoral degree obtained outside of Italy will have to obtain the formal recognition of its equivalence to an Italian doctoral degree (equivalenza or equipollenza). Do not worry about that, the offices of the University of Milan will help you with this procedure after you are selected. The same rule applies to those who will obtain their doctoral degree by the deadline indicated above: in that case, the procedure for obtaining the formal recongnition of the foreign degree will have to be initiated right after the awarding of the degree. Again, we can help with that.

For all the relevant information about criteria and modality for application, please consult the official document of the call which is available on the official page

  2. Set up an account and then access the system.

  3. I have prepared a document explaining how to complete the application procedure step-by-step: it is available here.

You will have to upload the following documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae in the form of a pdf file (according to the template provided in ALLEGATO A, see for example page 6-7 here. You can take some freedom and use a different template as long as the relevant info at the start of the file is there);

  • a research proposal (max 3 pages): describe your scientific interests, your background, and how you plan to contribute to the project lines;

  • list of publications (dated and signed);

  • up to 5 (accepted) publications of your choice (submitted as PDF files, possibly in a .zip folder); the Ph.D. thesis, if included in this folder, counts towards the upper limit of 5;

  • copy of a valid form of ID;

  • copy of your Codice Fiscale. This is mandatory for applicants born in Italy. For applicants who are not born in Italy, this attachment is not mandatory: unless you have been given a Codice Fiscale in the past, you may just upload a declaration stating you do not have one;

  • the ALLEGATO B, completed and signed (Declaration of conformity of publications);

  • copy of the receipt of payment of the non-refundable contribution of € 25,82. The bank transfer details (IBAN) are listed in Art. 3 (paragraph 12) of the official call.
  • non-EU citizens: you will need to upload copies of your PhD diploma (if already obtained), Master's and Bachelor's diploma. Alternatively, you can upload copies of the certificates issued by the competent universities declaring the awarding of the titles.

No letter of recommendation is required as part of the application procedure.
